Accessibility at Plumpton Park Zoo

Wheelchairs, strollers, parking and what to expect from our paths.

Plumpton Park Zoo is a rural zoo on rolling ground in Rising Sun, Maryland. This page tells you what to expect before you arrive so you can plan a comfortable visit. If anything here does not answer your question, call (410) 658-6850 or email [email protected] and we will help.

Parking and arrival

Parking is free. Clearly marked accessible parking spaces are set aside for visitors with disabilities, and admission is step-free.

Paths and terrain

Zoo pathways are surfaced with natural stone. Because the zoo is on rolling ground, some sections are steeper than others. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome; visitors who may have difficulty with grades or natural-stone surfaces are encouraged to allow extra time.

Wheelchairs and strollers

Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome throughout the zoo. The zoo does not provide wheelchairs. Wagons are available to rent for visitors who would like one during their visit.

Restrooms

Accessible restrooms are available at the Reptile House and the Giraffe Conservation Center. Changing facilities are also available.

Seating and shade

Benches are located throughout the zoo, providing places to rest along the visitor route. Many shaded areas are also available throughout the zoo. Food and drinks are available at the Zoo Cafe.

Giraffe feeding

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, giraffe feeding is offered at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. seven days a week. After Labor Day, feeding is offered at 12:00 noon on weekdays and at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on weekends, weather and animal conditions permitting. The giraffe feeding station is wheelchair accessible. See our giraffe feeding page.

Service animals

Service animals are permitted in accordance with applicable federal and Maryland law. Because this is a zoological facility with live animal exhibits, visitors arriving with a service animal should check with zoo staff at admission for any exhibit-specific safety guidance.

Sensory considerations

The zoo does not have rides or loudspeakers, but animal vocalizations can be loud at times and activity levels can vary throughout the day. Visitors who are sensitive to noise may wish to plan accordingly.

Admission and discounts

There is no separate disability discount or personal care attendant admission discount. Current admission information is available on the Hours & Tickets page.

Groups and schools

If your group includes visitors who need accommodations, tell us when you book and we will plan the visit around them. See School Field Trips and FAQ.
