Red Golden Pheasant

Red Golden pheasants are found in the mountains of central China. They are one of two species that are known as Ruffed pheasants, because the males have a “cape” that they spread around their necks and faces during courtship. Males have a yellow crest and a combination of many bright colors, including orange, black, brown, blue, green, yellow, and scarlet. Clutches range from 4-12 eggs, with a 22-23 day incubation.

Female Red Golden Pheasants are far less colorful than males, with mottled brown feathers that provide camouflage while nesting on the ground. Though capable of short, fast bursts of flight — especially to escape danger or reach a roosting branch for the night — they spend most of their time on the ground, where they forage for food.
